Chattogram witnessed widespread unrest on Monday as members of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Sena blocked key roads and clashed with police, demanding justice for the alleged killing of Islamic leader Maulana Rais Uddin.

Protesters from Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Sena staged road blockades and demonstrations across Chattogram city and surrounding areas, calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the death of Maulana Rais Uddin in Gazipur. The demonstrations turned violent in several locations, including Muradpur, where repeated clashes with law enforcement left multiple police officers injured.

The protests began in the morning at Muradpur intersection, where police requested demonstrators to stay on one side of the road to allow traffic flow. Tensions escalated when protesters attempted to vandalize vehicles, prompting police intervention. Demonstrators responded by hurling stones and bricks, injuring Five Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Solaiman and others. Police detained 16 individuals from the scene.

As the situation worsened, clashes spread into nearby alleys, particularly around Jamia Ahmadiyya Sunnia Kamil Madrasa. Protesters blocked nearby roads and railway tracks, resulting in a two-and-a-half-hour halt to two outbound trains at Sholoshohor Station.

Vehicular movement in Muradpur and Oxygen areas remained suspended throughout the day, creating severe traffic congestion across the city and causing immense public suffering.

Deputy Police Commissioner (North) Amirul Islam stated, “The protesters blocked multiple points across the city. When police asked them to clear the roads, they moved toward Bahaddarhat and attempted a larger blockade. Clashes intensified when they began pelting stones at police.”

Violent demonstrations were also reported in Bashkhali’s Gunagari area, where protesters clashed with police. In Patiya’s Kagzipara and Shantirhat, demonstrators set tires on fire to block roads. Road blockades extended to the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway and the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Sitakunda, Baghula Bazar, Kadamrasul, and Bhatiari. Demonstrations also spread to various upazilas including Hathazari, Rangunia, Raozan, Fatikchhari, Anwara, Boalkhali, Chandanaish, Satkania, and Lohagara.

Protesters alleged that Maulana Rais Uddin was falsely accused and beaten to death, and that police have failed to arrest those responsible even eight days after the incident. They warned of tougher actions if the killers are not apprehended soon.
