A fraud ring posing as spiritual healers known as the “King of Jinn” has been exposed for scamming people out of crores of taka through deceptive advertisements and spiritual claims. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested three members of the group from Borhanuddin in Bhola district, as confirmed during a press briefing on Sunday (May 25) at PBI Headquarters in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
The arrested individuals are Md. Rakib (20), Md. Rakib Molla (29), and Md. Alauddin.
According to Additional Deputy Inspector General Md. Enayet Hossain Mannan, the case began when a housewife from Tejgaon contacted the fraudulent group after her expatriate husband lost Tk 35 lacs to a Saudi sponsor while arranging visas for 17 Bangladeshis. Desperate for a solution, she was lured by flashy online ads claiming all problems could be solved at the spiritual court of “Shastrik Jainpuri Ma Fatema.”
The scammers promised help without any initial payment but gradually extorted Tk 10.2 lacs under various pretenses. They claimed a “jinn fairy” needed to be purified with 21 kg of milk from a Bhutanese cow, and demanded money for sacred rings, clothing for the jinn, and even a sacrificial goat.
To further manipulate victims, the group used female voice changers via apps to impersonate “Ma Fatema” and inserted terrifying jinn images from YouTube to threaten non-compliant targets. Victims were warned that their children would bleed from the mouth or die if they disclosed the scam.
The group used fake SIM registrations and opened bKash and Nagad accounts in other people’s names to receive the money. PBI seized four mobile phones, three promotional videos, seven advertisement photos, ten voice recordings of victim interactions, 150 pages of bKash statements, and identified five major bKash accounts involved in laundering crores of taka.
Investigators revealed the gang had been active since 2019, deceiving thousands of people across the country with fake promises of solving family disputes, recovering money, curing diseases, granting visas, and more.
