India stalwart Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket, following last year’s decision to quit the T20 format, leaving him to focus solely on One-Day Internationals.

Rumours had swirled for days that Kohli would bid farewell to red-ball cricket, despite a request from the BCCI for him to reconsider. On Monday, Kohli confirmed the decision via social media, marking the end of a 14-year Test career.

“I still can’t believe how far this format has taken me,” Kohli wrote. “Wearing the Baggy Blues cap for the first time changed my life. Test cricket gave me new challenges, shaped my character and taught lessons I will carry forever.”

Kohli described playing in the “white jersey” as a unique privilege. “There were countless moments unseen by the world but forever etched in my heart,” he added. “Leaving this format wasn’t easy, but I know it’s the right choice. I gave everything I had and received far more in return. My love for the game remains undiminished.”

In 123 Test matches, Kohli amassed 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. His departure follows that of captain Rohit Sharma, who retired from Tests days earlier, forcing India to field a new XI for the upcoming England tour.

As Kohli steps away from the longest format, fans will look to his continued exploits in ODIs to add to an already legendary career.
