A 5.1 magnitude earthquake jolted Kolkata and several parts of Odisha early on Tuesday morning, sending tremors as far as Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Bay of Bengal, at a depth of 91 kilometers beneath the surface.
On Tuesday, a powerful earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, and nearby areas of Odisha. The tremor was felt at approximately 6:10 AM local time, lasting only a few seconds but causing significant alarm in the affected regions.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter was located in the Bay of Bengal, around 91 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface, and about 220 kilometers away from Paradip in Odisha. Tremors were felt across Kolkata, Howrah, and West Midnapore districts, along with several other neighboring areas in South Bengal. Additionally, the shockwaves reached parts of Bangladesh and Odisha.
Liberty News international correspondent states that although the earthquake was strong enough to be felt over a large area, no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties have been confirmed. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as aftershocks remain a possibility.
