Clashes occurred between Chhatra Dal & anti-discrimination student movement activists at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) over the issue of banning student politics. At least 40-45 students were injured in the incident.
The clash took place this afternoon in front of the university’s central mosque.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khan Jahan Ali police station, Md. Kabir Hossain, confirmed the information to Liberty News.
According to eyewitnesses, at least five teachers who wished to remain anonymous, Chhatra Dal workers staged a protest on campus in the morning. Later, students of the anti-discrimination movement held a protest with slogans like “No student politics at KUET” and “We want a politics-free campus.” This led to a clash, a back-forth chase between both sides.
The students of the anti-discrimination movement accused a group of students trying to continue political activities on campus, despite the ban on student politics. When they protested, they were attacked.
OC Kabir Hossain said, “There was a chase between the students at KUET. So far, around 40-45 people have been injured. Joint forces are working to control the situation.”
Several members of the anti-discrimination student movement told Liberty News that Chhatra Dal is trying to disrupt the peaceful environment at KUET, and locals have joined them.
They said, “They attacked our peaceful rally with sticks. Many of our students were injured, with some suffering head injuries. We will never allow politics to return to campus.”
A leader of Chhatra Dal accused supporters of the banned group, Shibir, and the student wing of the ruling party, Chhatra League, of disrupting Chhatra Dal’s political activities on campus & its surroundings.
He added, “This is the reason behind today’s clash.”
