Labor Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain said the government is actively working to ensure fairness in labor rights and improve the condition of workers, though much remains to be done.

Speaking at a rally on Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka on Thursday morning, held in observance of May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day, Labor Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to protect workers’ rights and promote labor justice.

“We are trying to bring real change to workers’ lives,” Hossain said. “It’s not that we’ve done everything already, but we’ve taken important steps in the right direction.”

During his speech, he also reflected on Bangladesh’s current standing at the International Labour Organization (ILO), revealing concerns raised over the last two to three decades. “At the ILO, we found that workers’ wages and safety standards had become severely fragile. We were on the verge of being banned,” he stated.

The adviser stressed that although challenges persist, the government has initiated necessary reforms to avoid international sanctions and ensure a fairer labor environment in Bangladesh.
