The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs has clarified that no official decision has been made regarding the formation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In a statement issued today, the ministry addressed recent media reports that quoted Law Adviser Asif Nazrul’s remarks in a fragmented way.

According to the release, the adviser stated that any consideration of such a commission would only occur after justice is ensured for the mass killings during the July uprising, and only if leaders of the deposed party publicly express remorse.

The statement, signed by ministry spokesperson Dr Md Rezaul Karim, added that the idea of a commission would be explored in consultation with political parties, student leaders, and experts at an appropriate time. The adviser also emphasized that a future commission could help ensure that those responsible for the violence are permanently rejected by the nation.
