A Sylhet court has sentenced Masud Ahmed Chowdhury and two others to death for the brutal murder of his father, veteran lawyer and former Bar Association president Advocate Shamsul Islam Chowdhury, nearly 14 years after the crime.

On Tuesday, Sylhet Divisional Special Judge Shahadat Hossain Pramanik handed down the verdict in the long-pending murder case of Advocate Shamsul Islam Chowdhury. Alongside Masud Ahmed Chowdhury, the victim’s youngest son, the other convicts are Zaher Ali from Dowarabazar and Ansar Ahmed from Chhatak, both in Sunamganj.

In addition to the death penalty, the trio has been fined Tk 20,000 each and sentenced to three more years in prison for destroying evidence, with an additional fine of Tk 5,000. Another accused, Borhan Uddin, received a three-year jail term, while Ismail Hossain was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

According to the case details, Advocate Chowdhury went missing on July 17, 2011. Days later, suspicions grew after Masud—who had initially filed a general diary—also went missing. A formal case was filed by the victim’s elder son, Mahmud Ahmed Chowdhury, on August 4 that year. Investigation revealed that Masud, driven by greed over family property, conspired with accomplices to abduct and kill his father by throwing him into the Surma River.

The trial began in 2013 after charges were filed against five individuals. Two of the main convicts, Masud and Zaher, are currently absconding, as are the others who were released on bail. The case marks one of the most shocking examples of parricide in Sylhet’s legal history.
