Political leaders, including BNP, Jamaat-E-Islami and other party members, are preparing for Eid celebrations with many planning to spend the holiday in their electoral constituencies. This comes amid growing tensions in the country, with political activities gearing up for the upcoming general elections.
As Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, political figures from across the spectrum are finalizing their plans. After 16 years of “fascism-free” Bangladesh, BNP leaders and members will celebrate the occasion in a more open environment, as political restrictions have eased under the current government.
BNP’s ailing leader, Khaleda Zia, will celebrate Eid with her family in London, marking her first such gathering in over five years. Other top party leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, plan to celebrate in Dhaka, while some will visit the graves of the party’s founder, Ziaur Rahman, to pay their respects.
Jamaat-e-Islami’s leadership, including Amir Shafiqur Rahman, will celebrate in Dhaka, while other senior members will observe the holiday at their homes across the country. Islamic movement leaders, such as Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim of Islami Andolon Bangladesh, will mark Eid in Saudi Arabia after completing Umrah, returning shortly after the holiday.
Other smaller political parties, such as the Islamic Movement and Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, have similar plans, with leaders observing Eid in their respective constituencies or in the capital.
Liberty Liberty News’ political correspondent states that the government’s efforts to ensure peaceful celebrations come with a promise of further action if security concerns arise. Despite the festive mood, the political landscape remains tense with the upcoming national elections on the horizon.
