Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin has stated that leather prices are higher this year compared to previous years, dismissing claims of widespread dumping of semi-rotted hides as false.
During a visit to the Posta leather hub in Old Dhaka on Sunday night, the adviser said, “Compared to last year, prices for leather are up. Naturally, the value of semi-rotted hides is lower, but misleading information is being circulated across social and mainstream media.”
The adviser noted that the interim government had taken proactive measures to preserve raw hides effectively during Eid-ul-Azha, following directives from Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman accompanied him during the visit, which aimed to assess market conditions and address grievances raised by seasonal traders.
The government earlier fixed the price of salted cowhide at Tk 60–65 per square foot in Dhaka and Tk 55–60 per square foot outside the capital. However, traders in the area reported that many wholesalers are not adhering to these official rates, leading to frustration and financial losses among small-scale sellers.
