A legal notice was served on Islamic scholar and Jamaat leader Mufti Amir Hamza on Tuesday, warning him that he must apologise publicly within 48 hours or face a lawsuit for making defamatory and false remarks concerning Jahangirnagar University (JU).
Supreme Court’s lawyer Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan, also JU’s Senate member and a former student, sent the legal notice to Amir Hamza’s ancestral home in Kushtia.
Amir Hamza publicly claimed that JU students gargle with intoxicating liquors and also beat up their teachers with sticks, the notice said citing various news articles and YouTube videos.
The false, obscene and defamatory statement “hurt the feelings” of Shihab Uddin Khan as he is a former student of JU, the notice read.
The JU authorities have already issued a notification rejecting Amir Hamza’s claims, to which the Islamic scholar has not responded, confirming that the statements were false and insulting, the notice continued.
To this end, Amir Hamza must issue a press release, formally apologizing to the JU authorities as well as its present and former students for his “lies.” If he fails to do so within 48 hours of the issuance of the legal notice, he would be tried at a civil court and due compensation would be extracted from him, the notice warned.
