Star Cineplex, operated by Show Motion Ltd. – has been served a legal notice over allegations of customer harassment and unfair practices. The notice demands compensation and calls for punitive action from the consumer rights authority.
Supreme Court lawyer Khandaker Hasan Shahriar on Tuesday issued a legal notice to the Managing Director of Show Motion Ltd. (widely known as Star Cineplex) and the Director General of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), accusing the company of customer harassment and seeking compensation.
Sent via email, the notice alleges that Star Cineplex caused the complainant financial, mental, and legal distress. It urges the DNCRP to take necessary punitive action against the company under existing consumer protection laws. Failure to act, the notice warns, will lead to legal proceedings, including a possible writ petition in the High Court.
In the notice, Shahriar highlights that despite purchasing tickets in advance online, customers frequently face harassment at Star Cineplex venues. He blames the DNCRP’s inadequate monitoring for the continued mistreatment of consumers.
The notice also accuses Star Cineplex of repeatedly violating consumer rights by arbitrarily pricing food and beverages across all its branches without adhering to health guidelines or regulations. These actions, it says, amount to exploitation and deception.
Shahriar detailed his own experience of being harassed, further reinforcing the urgency of regulatory intervention. The legal move underscores growing concerns about unchecked corporate practices in the entertainment industry.
