Bangladesh assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin has hailed Liton Das as a “tactical” captain, emphasizing the need for support and trust as the wicketkeeper-batsman leads the T20I side in upcoming tours.
Liton Das has drawn praise for his captaincy since leading Bangladesh against the West Indies. His leadership impressed the BCB, eventually earning him the T20I captain’s armband. Senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin, who observed Liton closely during that West Indies tour, praised his tactical acumen in a recent press conference.
“Liton is a good tactician. He understands bowlers’ strengths and analyses opponents well. He has a clear idea about field placements, match progression, and managing the batting order. Be it handling bowlers, reading the wicket, or leading the team, he’s got a strong grip,” Salahuddin remarked.
Despite the leadership praise, Liton’s recent form with the bat has raised concerns. He scored a fifty only once in his last 10 T20I innings and reached double digits just once in his last three outings. Salahuddin acknowledged this dip in form, noting, “Yes, his current lack of runs is a weakness.”
Still, Salahuddin urged unwavering support for Liton, stressing that captaincy in Bangladesh is a challenging task. “It may seem easy from the outside, but leading the national team is tough. We all need to support him. When the team doesn’t perform consistently, the captain’s job becomes harder. That’s the reality we must accept.”
He also called for giving Liton the freedom to lead in his own way. “Those of us around him must back him, give him space. Only then will he perform better.”
Drawing parallels with Shakib Al Hasan, Salahuddin added, “Just like people misjudged Shakib from a distance, many misread Liton because he speaks less. But those who interact with him closely know how committed and effective he is—not just as a player, but as a leader.”
