The Local Government Reform Commission has recommended the abolition of existing laws and regulations governing local governments, advocating for a unified and singular local government law that aligns with all institutions, along with the creation of necessary rules and guidelines.

The commission proposed establishing inter-institutional relationships and cooperation across all councils, asserting that creating one or two such laws would standardize the organizational structures of five local government institutions under a parliamentary system. This, they believe, would simplify the election process and reduce costs.

In addition, the commission suggested fundamental changes to the operations and structure of district councils. They recommended reestablishing the district council as a decentralized planning unit, with all development-related departments in the district placed under the jurisdiction of the council, headed by the chairman. A joint secretary-ranked official would be appointed as the chief executive officer of the council. Meanwhile, the office of the Deputy Commissioner would continue to serve as the national government’s representative and remain responsible for land management.

Liberty News’ national correspondent states that the summary of the commission’s recommendations was released on Friday by the press wing of the chief adviser.
