Shocking information has emerged regarding the killing of Jagannath University student and Chhatra Dal leader Jobayed Hossain. During primary interrogation, the accused student Barjis Shabnam Barsha told police that the murder was linked to the troubled relationship between her and her ex-boyfriend Mahir Rahman. However, Barsha claimed she was unaware of the plan to kill Jobayed.

This information was confirmed on Monday morning by Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Bangshal Police Station, after the initial questioning of Barsha.

9-Year Relationship Turned Deadly

OC Rafiqul Islam stated that Barsha and Mahir had been in a romantic relationship for nine years. Mahir is a first-year student at Borahaan Uddin College, while Barsha is a second-year student at Dhaka Mohanagar Mohila College. They grew up as neighbors and had feelings for each other since the fourth grade. Their relationship broke off recently after ongoing complications.

Despite the breakup, they remained in contact. Barsha reportedly told Mahir that she liked Jobayed, though she hadn’t conveyed her feelings to Jobayed himself.

No Relationship With the Victim

According to police, Barsha did not have a romantic relationship with Jobayed. But Mahir, driven by jealousy and anger, allegedly murdered Jobayed with the help of a friend, based solely on Barsha’s mention that she liked him. Police are treating the incident as a murder over romantic rivalry.

Barsha Showed No Remorse

OC Rafiqul Islam added that Barsha displayed no regret, emotion, or nervousness during questioning. She appeared completely calm and detached. Police will continue the investigation and provide updates later.

Details of the Victim

Jobayed was a student of the 2019–20 session in the Department of Statistics at Jagannath University. He was also the President of the Cumilla District Student Welfare Association and a convening member of the university’s Chhatra Dal unit.

For the past year, he had been tutoring Barsha at her family’s home in Armanitola, Old Dhaka. Her father’s name is Gia Uddin.

On Sunday at around 4:45 PM, Jobayed was murdered on the third floor of the building. Blood was found from the third-floor staircase down to the ground floor. His body was found lying face down.

Student Protests and Police Custody

Following the incident, Jagannath University students staged protests by blocking Tantibazar intersection and setting fires in front of Bangshal Police Station, demanding the arrest of the killers. Around 11 PM, police took Barsha into custody for interrogation. The deceased’s body was later taken to Mitford Hospital for autopsy.

No Case Filed Even After 14 Hours

Over 14 hours after the murder, Jobayed’s family was still trying to file a case. From 1 AM Sunday night until 8:30 AM Monday, no FIR was registered, and the prime accused—Mahir and his friend—have not yet been arrested. Police claim that operations to apprehend them are still underway.
