A 19-year-old youth was found dead at a residence in Dhaka’s Bangshal area on Saturday — marking what could be the second murder in the capital this month linked to a “love-related dispute.”

The deceased, identified as Sajib, was recovered with a GI cable tied around his neck, while his parents claimed they also found cables around his wrists and multiple injury marks in his body.

Police are yet to confirm whether Sajib’s death was a suicide or a homicide possibly stemming from a love-related conflict, said Md Sohel Hossain, inspector at Bangshal Police Station.

Officers recovered the body around 5:00pm and later sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at approximately 10:30pm for an autopsy, the inspector added.

According to police, Sajib had completed his SSC but had discontinued his studies, and was planning to go abroad for work.

“After recovering the body, we informed his parents and requested them to come to the scene,” said Inspector Sohel.

Sajib’s parents, Nur Nahar Begum and Taj Uddin, told reporters that their son had been in a relationship with a girl from the same neighbourhood. However, they said, the girl had recently begun to distance herself from him.

On Saturday, she allegedly called Sajib to her maternal uncle’s house, where — according to his parents — she and several accomplices assaulted and ultimately killed him.
