Jibon Dhali from Madaripur left home six months ago with the dream of going to Italy. Enticed by brokers, he set off for Europe across the Mediterranean Sea, but his dream never came true. The young man was shot dead by a mafia gang in Libya.
Jibon, 22, son of Kalam Dhali, was killed on 8 September 8 in Libya after being shot by a mafia gang. When his death news reached his home in Joiyar village under Mostafapur Union of Madaripur Sadar upazila on Thursday (18 September), grief engulfed the entire area.
According to family and local sources, Jibon’s travel escorts in Libya called his family to confirm the news of his death. About six months ago, Jibon went to Libya with intent to travel to Italy, having been tempted by a human trafficker named Russel Khan from Jhikorhati village, Ghatmajhi Union of the Sadar Upazila. He chose this path with the dream of bringing financial stability to his family. After being held captive there for several months, he was shot dead by the mafia gang.
His parents are repeatedly losing consciousness upon hearing the news of Jibon’s death, silencing the entire village with grief.
Locals said that many young men are losing their lives this way due to falling into the traps of brokers. They demanded that the state provide assistance to the victim’s family.
Regarding the matter, Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Adil Hossain said that young men from various regions of the country are losing their lives after falling into the traps of brokers while trying to go to Italy via Libya. The police are stepping up efforts to trace human trafficking rings.
Legal action will be taken if a written complaint is filed against the accused broker in this connection, the OC added.
