Adviser Mahfuz Alam has stated that enforced disappearances and the “Ayna Ghar” began during the rule of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and that his daughter, Sheikh Hasina, continued the path of authoritarianism.
On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, during the inauguration of ‘Tarunner Utsob 2025’ at the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) in Dhaka, adviser Mahfuz Alam addressed the media, stating that the practices of enforced disappearances and “Ayna Ghar” (the place of interrogation) began under the regime of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and were carried forward by Sheikh Hasina.
Alam criticized both leaders for their authoritarian approach, claiming that Sheikh Mujib’s reign involved severe repression of political opposition, and that Sheikh Hasina continued this tradition. He alleged that, under Hasina’s government, public funds were used to support goons within various administrative levels.
He also reflected on the dreams of students who have taken to the streets, saying that their aspirations remain unfulfilled. Alam emphasized that securing justice for those responsible for killings would fulfill these dreams. Additionally, he mentioned the long-unrealized hope for reforms in the country, stressing that while efforts are being made to ensure justice, true reform has yet to materialize.
Liberty News’ national correspondent states that Alam concluded by stating that simply focusing on elections and reforms wouldn’t suffice, as the government is actively working toward establishing a new state structure.
