Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam has admitted that he remains uncertain about his position, saying he does not know when he might be required to step down.

“I have been in uncertainty for the past two months, not knowing when I will have to leave. I do not know when I will step down,” he remarked.

He made the comments on Sunday morning at a dialogue titled ‘Self-Regulation and Complaint Mechanism in the Media: Political and Policy Perspectives’, held at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital.

The dialogue was organised by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) with support from the United Kingdom Government and The Asia Foundation.

Mahfuz Alam stressed that political parties must decide whether they will cooperate with advisers working in their roles or place obstacles before them. “Political parties need to consider how they can extend cooperation to those carrying out their duties, rather than creating obstacles, and allow us to do our work,” he said.

He noted that since May, political parties had begun demanding the resignation of student advisers. According to him, he could even hear the chants of these slogans from his official residence.

The Adviser also pointed out that the Journalism Protection Act involves 18 procedural steps, from drafting to passing the law in Parliament. Despite giving instructions to initiate the process two months ago, it is still stuck at the second stage.

Highlighting the contrast with other advisers, Mahfuz Alam said while many who took office in August last year were still struggling to understand their responsibilities, he had to deal with uncertainty from the very next day of his appointment.

He, however, expressed hope that the Journalism Protection Act would be enacted within the tenure of the current government.
