Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has been elected as Canada’s new Prime Minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau.

On Sunday, Mark Carney was officially named the new leader of Canada’s Liberal Party and is set to take over as Prime Minister, following Justin Trudeau’s resignation after serving for nine years. The announcement was made by Liberal Party President, Satchit Mehra.

Carney, who served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, won the leadership election with 131,674 votes. His closest rival, Chrystia Freeland, garnered 11,134 votes.

Carney’s election comes at a time of economic uncertainty, as the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States intensify. U.S. President Donald Trump recently imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, which could potentially push Canada’s economy into recession. Carney has described this period as a “defining moment” for the nation’s future.

Born in 1965 in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Carney grew up in Alberta. He holds a degree in Economics from Harvard University and a postgraduate degree and doctorate from Oxford. Carney’s experience in handling financial crises has made him a well-respected figure in economic leadership. Although he lacks direct political experience, his extensive background in economics and crisis management is expected to help guide Canada through these challenging times.

Liberty News’ international correspondent states that Carney will take office as Prime Minister shortly and is expected to implement effective measures to stabilize the country’s economy.
