Australia have settled on their T20I opening pair ahead of next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with captain Mitchell Marsh confirming he and Travis Head will lead from the top.
“It’ll be myself and Heady up the top for the foreseeable future,” Marsh told reporters on Friday. “We’ve played a lot together, have a great relationship, so we’ll start there.”
While yet to open together in T20 internationals, the pair share a strong ODI record — 282 runs from just five innings at an average of 70.50. Overall, they have scored 504 runs from 14 innings across formats, including one century and three half-century stands.
The announcement comes as Australia prepare for a three-match T20I series against South Africa, starting Sunday, 10 August, with Head returning to the side fresh from missing the 5-0 T20I sweep of West Indies last month.
Since David Warner’s retirement after last year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, Australia have trialled several openers — including Matt Short, Glenn Maxwell and Jake Fraser-McGurk — but Marsh and Head are now set to be the long-term choice.
Marsh also discussed the role of power-hitter Tim David, whose record-breaking 37-ball century against West Indies was the fastest by an Australian. “We’ve spoken about it,” Marsh said. “In the Caribbean, he came in earlier than normal. His skill set is made for that. The more balls he faces, hopefully the more games he wins us.”
