Students and citizens have gathered in a mass rally near the Chief Adviser’s residence in Jamuna, demanding the trial of the Awami League and a ban on its political activities following the July uprising.
Following Juma prayers on Friday, processions of students and protesters converged at the makeshift stage set up on trucks near the eastern fountain beside the Jamuna residence. Chants demanding the ban of Awami League and the trial of Sheikh Hasina echoed through the area.
Organizers have prepared a temporary stage using five trucks covered with awnings. Participants of an ongoing sit-in were joined by fresh processions from various directions. In response, police set up barricades from Hotel Intercontinental to Kakrail Mosque, halting vehicular movement.
According to organizers, the rally aims to push for a clear roadmap to ban Awami League’s political operations and ensure justice for incidents related to the July movement. An ultimatum may also be announced during the program.
The call for this large post-Juma gathering was made by Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer (South Zone) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), inviting all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
Since Thursday night, students and youth under the banner of multiple platforms—including NCP, July Oikya, Shibir, Ap Bangladesh, Inqilab Mancha, Hefazat-e-Islam, Democratic Student Parliament, and Qawmi Madrasah groups—have been holding a sit-in at the venue. Jamaat-e-Islami and other organizations have expressed solidarity.
Participants also performed Juma prayers on the street as part of the ongoing demonstration.
