Mauritania Airlines has categorically denied widespread social media rumors that a Hajj-bound flight carrying 210 pilgrims crashed off the Red Sea coast, confirming all passengers arrived safely in Saudi Arabia.

Widespread panic erupted on Tuesday, May 27, after unverified reports began circulating online claiming that a Mauritanian aircraft en route to Saudi Arabia with 210 Hajj pilgrims had crashed near the Red Sea. According to these reports, the plane lost contact mid-flight and was later said to have gone down mysteriously.

However, Mauritania Airlines swiftly issued an official statement dismissing the claims as “entirely baseless and misleading.” The airline reassured the public, stating, “By the grace of Allah, all our Hajj pilgrims have reached Saudi Arabia safely. No flight has experienced any kind of accident.”

The airline further clarified that all scheduled flights for the Hajj season have proceeded without incident, labeling the circulating rumors as “deliberate misinformation.” Authorities warned that the spread of such falsehoods is a serious offense and legal action is being considered against those responsible.

The company also urged media outlets and social media users to act responsibly and avoid spreading unverified information. “Disseminating fake news not only misleads the public but also causes unnecessary distress to the families of passengers,” the statement read.

International media outlets including Middle East-based MASDR News have corroborated the airline’s version, confirming there is no evidence of a crash. A video that surfaced alongside the rumors, appearing to show terrified passengers chanting “Allahu Akbar” inside a turbulent aircraft, was also debunked. Fact-checkers verified that the footage was from an unrelated, older incident.

The Mauritanian government and airline officials condemned the fear-mongering and urged the public to rely solely on credible sources for updates. They emphasized the need for calm during the sensitive Hajj period and reaffirmed their commitment to passenger safety.
