Kylian Mbappé marked the start of his second season with Real Madrid with a crucial goal, helping the team secure a 1-0 victory over Osasuna in Tuesday’s Spanish league opener at Santiago Bernabeu. The French forward converted a 51st-minute penalty after drawing a foul with a clever run and cutback through the right side of the area.
The win gave new coach Xabi Alonso a victorious debut in his first full season with the club, taking over from Carlo Ancelotti, who left to coach Brazil. Alonso fielded three of Madrid’s new signings — left back Álvaro Carreras, right back Trent Alexander-Arnold, and central defender Dean Huijsen — while teenage forward Franco Mastantuono came off the bench in the 68th minute to replace Brahim Díaz.
Despite dominating possession with over 70%, Madrid struggled to break through Osasuna’s compact defense early on. Mbappé had an early chance with a curling shot in the first half that just missed the top corner before securing the penalty goal in the 51st minute, sending a low shot into the right side of the net.
Osasuna defender Abel Bretones was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for a high-arm challenge, and despite late opportunities, Madrid held on for the win. Coach Alonso praised his new signings, noting they handled the pressure well, while downplaying Rodrygo’s absence from the lineup, insisting the Brazil international remains part of his plans.
The result follows Barcelona’s 3-0 opening win over nine-man Mallorca and Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 loss at Espanyol. Madrid finished last season as league runners-up to Barcelona, while Osasuna came ninth.
