The permanent employees of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTC) have threatened to suspend metro rail services from Friday unless the authorities implement a self-sufficient job regulation by tomorrow, Thursday.
In a press release issued on Monday night, the DMTC employees warned that if the issue is not resolved, Dhaka residents will be deprived of metro rail services, and DMTC management will be held responsible. The employees, who were appointed through open recruitment, expressed frustration over the lack of progress in enacting the self-sufficient job regulations, despite a directive given by the Road Transport Adviser, Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, on September 12.
At a meeting in December, DMTC’s 60th board session decided to draft the regulations within 60 days and submit them to the Ministry of Road Transport. However, despite five months passing, the regulation has not been finalized, which led to over 200 trained domestic and foreign employees resigning, jeopardizing the metro rail’s operation and maintenance.
On February 13, the employees raised their concerns again, resulting in detailed discussions about the draft until Monday. The DMTC’s senior management promised to amend the draft and call a board meeting to finalize the regulation.
Speaking on the issue, DMTC’s Managing Director Mohammad Abdur Rouf confirmed that efforts are underway to resolve the matter, though he acknowledged that the process might take longer than expected. Rouf assured that the regulations would eventually be implemented, and a committee is already in place to finalize the service rules.
Liberty News’ national correspondent states that the unresolved issue has led to growing tensions, and employees are now urging for swift action to prevent disruption of metro services.
