A Dhaka court has sent Milton Samaddar, chairman of the ‘Child and Old Age Care’ shelter, along with his wife Mithu Halder, to jail after rejecting their bail in an attempted murder case tied to disturbing allegations of torture, document forgery, and human trafficking.

Milton Samaddar, a controversial figure in Bangladesh’s social welfare sector, was ordered to prison along with his wife Mithu Halder on Saturday, May 17, following their surrender before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Minhazur Rahman. The court dismissed their bail pleas after a hearing and issued the remand to jail custody.

According to legal representative Wahiduzzaman Bippob, the court had accepted the charge sheet on May 6. However, Samaddar missed the hearing due to his mother’s death a day earlier, prompting his legal team to seek an extension—an appeal the court denied. Subsequently, arrest warrants were issued for both Samaddar and his wife.

The case stems from a series of grave allegations. On May 1 last year, Dhaka’s Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Samaddar from the Mirpur area. He was accused of producing fake death certificates, operating a “torture cell” inside his care home, and engaging in human trafficking.

The next day, a Dhaka court approved a three-day remand for him in the case involving the forged death certificate. On May 5, DB Inspector Shikdar Maitul Alam petitioned to show him arrested in the human trafficking case and sought a seven-day remand. Magistrate Mehera Mahbub approved his arrest under the anti-trafficking law.

Following a hearing, Magistrate Shanta Akter granted a four-day remand, after which Samaddar was sent to jail on May 9. While in custody, he was again shown arrested in another assault case.

Eventually, Samaddar secured bail in all three cases. However, following the completion of the investigation, DB Inspector Ataur Rahman submitted a charge sheet accusing him of attempted murder. His wife, Mithu Halder, was also named as an accomplice in the charge sheet.

This latest court decision revives public scrutiny on private welfare shelters operating without accountability, as well as on the rising number of high-profile human trafficking cases in Bangladesh.
