BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized the need for minimum reforms to ensure free and fair elections, clarifying that the party has never demanded reforms before elections.

On Wednesday, at a meeting with party leaders and workers in his residence in Thakurgaon, Mirza Fakhrul addressed the ongoing political discourse surrounding the election reforms. He stated, “We have never said reforms should come after the election. This is a misinterpretation, and the public is being misled. We have called for necessary reforms to ensure a fair election process.”

Fakhrul also mentioned that BNP was being targeted through political propaganda. He stressed that political relations, whether involving the Awami League, BNP, Jamaat, NCP, or Zaker Party, should remain connected to the people. “We respect and honor the scholars and educated individuals pushing for reforms, but if their actions deviate from the people’s needs, we cannot support them,” he added.

Liberty News’ political correspondent states that, further commenting on democracy, Fakhrul noted, “Democracy is the best system for running the state. If political parties turn authoritarian, as seen with the Awami League, the people will eventually remove them from power. Therefore, the fault does not lie with the people. Democracy remains the most effective form of governance.”
