BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed concern over the vague comments made by the Chief Adviser regarding the timing of the upcoming national election, emphasizing that his party seeks a clear roadmap and swift elections for the nation’s benefit

In a statement made on Wednesday morning, following a tribute ceremony at the mausoleum of President Ziaur Rahman on Independence Day in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Mirza Fakhrul criticized the Chief Adviser’s recent remarks about holding the election between December and June, describing them as ambiguous. He highlighted that no concrete roadmap had been provided for the six-month timeframe.

Fakhrul reiterated that the BNP does not call for elections to seize power, but rather to protect the nation’s interests and sovereignty. “We have consistently called for a clear roadmap and immediate elections. Without these, the ongoing crisis will remain unresolved,” he added.

Reflecting on the legacy of the late President Ziaur Rahman, Fakhrul reminded the public that he not only declared independence but also led the Liberation War, securing victory after nine months of struggle. “Millions of lives were lost, and countless mothers and sisters suffered during the fight for independence,” he said.

The BNP leader further criticized the current government, accusing them of subjecting the nation to severe oppression over the past 15 years, including enforced disappearances and killings. “After the people’s uprising on August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina was forced into exile. That revolution gave birth to a new Bangladesh,” he remarked.

Fakhrul expressed hope that the interim government would swiftly announce elections following necessary reforms. He was accompanied at the tribute ceremony by senior party leaders, including Mirza Abbas, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Khairul Kabir Khokon, and other prominent members of the party’s leadership and its allied organizations.

Liberty News’ political correspondent states that later in the day, Fakhrul was scheduled to attend a reception at the Bangabhaban, invited by the President, to mark Independence Day.
