When asked if the UN Secretary-General had commented on reforms, BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir responded that the UN Secretary-General had not said anything on the matter, emphasizing that it is an internal issue. “Honestly, I didn’t really understand the purpose of this roundtable,” he added.
He made this remark after attending the roundtable meeting at the Hotel InterContinental in Shahbagh, Dhaka, on Saturday afternoon. The meeting was held with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and included members of the National Consensus Commission and political leaders.
Mirza Fakhrul further stated that the commissions related to the reforms were informed to the UN Secretary-General. Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul had briefed him on the matter. “We reiterated the same points we have been raising in our statements,” he added.
BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that reforms are essential and emphasized that these reforms must be implemented as quickly as possible. He stated, “We have said that election-related reforms should be completed first, followed by holding an election. After that, further reforms can be made through Parliament. Reform is an ongoing process, this is what we have advocated.”
When asked about any specific time frame for the election, Fakhrul responded, “There is no need for us to mention any time frame. Reforms are an internal matter for us. We are in discussions with the reform commissions, we are in contact with them. We are providing everything they ask for. We have already had a meeting with them. Why would we give our time frame to the UN Secretary-General?
