The crescent moon marking the beginning of the holy month of Zilhajj has been sighted in Bangladesh, confirming that Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated across the country on Saturday, June 7.

The National Moon Sighting Committee made the announcement on Wednesday evening following a meeting held after sunset. As the moon was sighted on May 28, the counting of Zilhajj will begin from Thursday, May 29. Accordingly, Muslims in Bangladesh will observe Eid-ul-Azha, the second-largest religious festival in Islam, on the 10th of Zilhajj, which falls on June 7.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia had already declared the sighting of the Zilhajj moon on Tuesday. The country’s Supreme Court confirmed the moon sighting, setting the Islamic calendar in motion for the annual pilgrimage.

As a result, the Hajj pilgrimage will begin on June 4, with pilgrims gathering in Mina near Makkah to commence the rites. On June 5, which corresponds to 9 Zilhajj, pilgrims will gather at the plains of Arafat for the most significant ritual of Hajj. The following day, June 6, Eid-ul-Azha will be observed in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries.

Eid-ul-Azha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command. It is marked by special prayers, the sacrifice of animals, and the distribution of meat to family, neighbors, and the poor.
