BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that while the ongoing reform efforts by the National Consensus Commission involve “more feasting than serious discussion,” his party remains hopeful that a final consensus can be reached. He made the remarks on Thursday (26 June) at an event marking the 13th founding anniversary of Nagorik Oikya at the National Press Club.
Reflecting on past political struggles, Ahmed said the fall of the previous authoritarian regime was rooted in BNP’s simultaneous movement. “We knew fascism would fall, but we didn’t know when or how,” he added.
On the issue of political reform, Ahmed mentioned that the BNP supports the proposal limiting any individual from serving as Prime Minister of Bangladesh for more than ten years. He said this agreement alone sends a strong signal against authoritarianism.
He further emphasized the importance of judicial independence as a safeguard for democracy and called for a free press, stating that journalists should serve their conscience, not their owners. Ahmed pledged BNP’s continued support for media freedom.
Commenting on the role of the Election Commission, he said that only a genuinely independent and capable commission can prevent authoritarianism. Weakening only the executive branch is not enough, he warned.
