Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11) has arrested two brothers in connection with the killing of Ibrahim Khalil, the secretary of Baitul Al-Aqsa Jame Mosque in Debidwar, Comilla, following a clash over a cricket match.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Zahid Hossain Bhuiyan (25) and his brother Anik Bhuiyan (20), both sons of Zahirul Islam Bhuiyan (alias Bhuttu) from Fatehabad village under Debidwar Police Station in Comilla.
According to a press release signed by RAB-11 Company Commander and Squadron Leader Md. Ishtiaq Hossain on Friday night, the arrests were made during a joint operation conducted by RAB-11 and RAB-3 in the Adarshanagar area of Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, on Thursday night.
The incident traces back to February 14, when a fight broke out between residents of Nayakandi and Fatehabad villages over a cricket match in Debidwar. Verbal altercations and physical clashes ensued between the groups led by Masud and Kamrul.
Later that night, around 9:30 PM, supporters of Masud, including Obaidul and Zillur, allegedly attacked Kamrul’s group. In fear for their lives, some of Kamrul’s companions took refuge inside the mosque. The attackers, allegedly from Nayakandi, entered the mosque, beat up worshippers indiscriminately, and vandalized the premises.
Twelve people, including mosque secretary Ibrahim Khalil, were injured while trying to protect the mosque and its worshippers. Khalil was admitted to a hospital in Dhaka in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries six days later.
Liberty News’ crime correspondent states that RAB stated that efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects involved in the incident.
