The death of Bangladeshi film icon Salman Shah was not a suicide but a brutal and preplanned murder — such a shocking allegation has resurfaced nearly 29 years later. Rezvi Ahmed Farhad, the 11th accused in the case, has given a horrifying account of what happened on the night of Salman Shah’s death.
In a statement recorded in 1997 under Section 164, Rezvi admitted involvement in the killing. He claimed that the murder was disguised as a suicide and that Salman’s then-wife Samira Haque and her family, along with several others, were directly involved in the crime. Rezvi also confessed that he was present during the execution of the murder.
According to Rezvi, the crime was carried out under a Tk 12 lakh contract, allegedly initiated by Salman’s former mother-in-law Latifa Haque Lucy. He named several others — including film antagonist Don, David, Faruk, and Javed — as part of the conspiracy.
Rezvi described the terrifying night in chilling detail. In the early hours of September 6, 1996, the killers entered Salman Shah’s apartment while he was asleep. Samira reportedly used chloroform to render Salman unconscious. When he regained consciousness, a physical struggle broke out before an injection was administered, resulting in his death.
To stage the incident as a suicide, Rezvi claimed that Salman’s body was then hung from a ceiling fan. He also mentioned that on the previous night, conspirators had gathered in a Gulistan bar where an initial Tk 2 lakh was paid, with the remaining amount promised after the murder.
Despite several investigations over the years that ruled the death as an unnatural death or suicide, Rezvi insisted that the truth was intentionally avoided. Now, after decades of public concern and suspicion, the case has officially been reclassified as a murder investigation.
A total of 11 people have been accused in the case. Salman Shah’s former wife Samira Haque has been named the prime accused. Others include businessman and producer Aziz Mohammed Bhai, actor Don, Latifa Haque Lucy, David, Javed, Faruk, Ruby, Abdus Sattar, Saju, and Rezvi Ahmed Farhad himself.
Fans and the entertainment community are now hopeful that justice will finally be served for one of the most beloved stars in Bangladesh’s film history.
