Unbeaten centuries from Mushfiqur Rahim and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto lifted Bangladesh to a commanding position on Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium.
After an early collapse left Bangladesh at 45 for three, the experienced Mushfiqur and the composed Shanto combined for a record 247-run partnership — the highest fourth-wicket stand for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka.
Mushfiqur, who last scored a Test century in Rawalpindi against Pakistan, reached his 12th hundred off 176 balls, hitting five boundaries. The century also marked his third against Sri Lanka, including a double century at the same venue in 2013.
Shanto brought up his sixth Test ton and second against Sri Lanka, anchoring the innings with maturity after the early losses.
Bangladesh closed the day at 292 for three after 90 overs, with both batters set to continue on Day 2 as they aim to consolidate their strong start.
