Mushfiqur Rahim, who recently became the first Bangladeshi to play 100 Test matches, reflected on his two-decade-long career, saying he has no regrets but holds a strong wish for the team’s future.

“No, if you talk about regrets, there’s no end to human desires here. But being a senior player, if you talk about playing Test cricket for so many years, I have one wish that, hopefully, by the time I leave this team, Bangladesh can at least be in the top six. So, that’s one of my goals. Let’s see how much Allah fulfills that,” Mushfiqur said.

Asked about how many more Tests he intends to play, he said his fitness and skill remain at a good level. “No, so far, as I said, so far, Alhamdulillah. Whether you talk about fitness or skill set, I’m quite happy at where I am now. But as the days go by, I must improve further, and I know that area, and Insha’Allah, I will try that way. Playing every Test for Bangladesh is very special for me. I hope to contribute as much as possible and play as long as my team management wants me, or the team wants, and as long as I feel from inside that, yes, my team needs me, I intend to play until then.”

Mushfiqur also shared his view on Bangladesh’s overall progress in Test cricket over the years. He pointed to the limited number of matches played annually as a major challenge, affecting player rhythm and team consistency.

“Where we are lagging, as I said, Root played 100 Tests in eight years by force, almost nine years. Because India, Australia, England, play Test matches for so many years. Like you see today, in this Test match, Litton or I, or whoever contributed somewhat, we have to wait four months after this. Maybe Litton will play, he will play the other format. But I have to wait four months to play my next innings. If I don’t have to bat in this innings or if I do, to play the next Test. So, this is a very big problem for a batsman. Because when you get into a rhythm, if you don’t play at least four to six or seven matches back-to-back, it’s very difficult to come and play again that way.”

He added that this lack of regular Test cricket historically led to frequent changes in the playing eleven, which hindered consistency. However, he noted that the situation has improved in recent years.

“Our biggest minus point was that we used to play so few Test matches per year. Every year a new eleven was coming. So, it takes some time for them to get set. And a new batsman is coming. So, this was a very big setback. But the way Bangladesh cricket has been consistently playing Test cricket for the last four or five years, at least, I think now we should, and our batting unit especially, many players have already played 50 plus, 30 plus matches. So, we should at least make our batting unit more consistent. At least we should be able to score 300, 350 regularly, anywhere, in any condition. If we increase this consistency, I think we will be able to go up in the rankings.”
