Amid an intensified crackdown on alleged illegal immigrants, Assam police have been accused of targeting Indian Muslims under the guise of identifying Bangladeshis, sparking political outrage and human rights concerns.
Police operations across Assam have intensified in recent days to locate and detain undocumented Bangladeshis. Over 150 to 200 individuals declared “foreigners” by various tribunals have reportedly been sent to Matia Detention Camp, according to official sources.
Meanwhile, another 150 suspected Bangladeshis who allegedly crossed into Assam via the Tripura and Meghalaya borders were detained and handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) for imminent pushback.
The sweeping campaign, which began last Friday night, includes door-to-door nighttime raids in multiple districts. In Guwahati and Kamrup alone, more than 100 individuals were brought to police reserves for document verification and interrogation.
However, opposition leaders have condemned the drive, claiming that genuine Indian Muslims are being wrongfully targeted. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislator Rafiqul Islam stated, “We oppose illegal foreigners in Assam, but harassing Indian citizens in the name of identifying Bangladeshis is unacceptable.”
Congress MLA Abdur Rahim echoed the criticism, saying, “Muslims are being treated like cattle. This government’s indiscriminate branding of Indian Muslims as Bangladeshis shows its anti-Muslim stance.”
Rights activists and minority leaders have demanded a transparent process and fair verification, warning that the campaign could further marginalize Assam’s Muslim community under a politically sensitive pretext.
