The death toll from the recent earthquake in Myanmar has surged past 1,600. On Saturday, Myanmar’s military junta reported that fatalities have reached 1,644, with 3,408 people injured and 139 still missing.

The devastating earthquake struck Myanmar last Friday, causing widespread destruction. Rescue teams from China and Russia have already arrived in the country. According to an international Reuters report on Saturday, a 37-member Chinese rescue team landed in Yangon with medical supplies and other essential materials.

Russia has also deployed a rescue team comprising 120 personnel, including doctors and search dogs.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with Myanmar’s junta chief over the phone, pledging to send $13.77 million worth of aid, including tents, blankets, and emergency medical supplies.

The catastrophic earthquake has led to a severe humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. Many people remain trapped under the rubble, crying for help. The worst-hit area is Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay.
