Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman should not be regarded as the “Father of the Nation,” while acknowledging his role and sacrifices in the country’s independence.
He highlighted the national tragedies that unfolded under Mujibur Rahman’s leadership, asserting that Bangladesh was reduced to a tributary state of India, the 1972 Constitution imposed was anti-people and the foundations were laid for looting, political killings and the one-party BAKSAL dictatorship.
According to Nahid, the core of the Awami League’s politics is “Mujib worship” and “Liberation War worship,” which the party describes as political idolatry used to oppress citizens, plunder the nation and divide people into first-class and second-class citizens.
For decades, the Awami League has treated Bangladesh as its ancestral property, ruling without accountability and using Mujibur Rahman’s name to justify corruption and repression, Nahid wrote on his verified Facebook page on Friday.
The NCP leader cited the People’s Uprising of 2024 as a turning point, saying that no individual, family or ideology will again be allowed to impose fascism or strip citizens of their rights.
The “Father of the Nation” title is not a historical fact but a political tool manufactured by the Awami League to silence dissent and monopolise the state, he said.
“Mujibism,” the NCP asserted, is a fascist ideology that promotes division, human rights violations, corruption, Islamophobia and the selling of national sovereignty to foreign powers. The party emphasised that its struggle is not against any individual but against the ideology itself,” he said.
Nahid said defeating Mujibism requires political, ideological and cultural resistance and reiterated his party’s vision of a sovereign, democratic Bangladesh, where no party, dynasty, or leader stands above the people.
“Bangladesh belongs equally to all its citizens. It is not the property of any individual or family,” he said in the Facebook post.
