Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), expressed concern that the spirit of the July Uprising is not being equally upheld by all anti-fascist forces, warning that without structural reform, the revolution may lose its meaning.
Speaking at the “NCP Boishakh Celebration 1432” held Monday morning at Navy Goli, Eskaton Garden, Nahid Islam highlighted the urgent need for national renewal through structural reform. He emphasized that the July Uprising sparked hopes for a new state and a new Bangladesh, but those aspirations are not being fully embraced by all forces opposing fascism.
“Boishakh is not only a celebration, it is a moment of renewal. Just as businesses clear old debts through hal khata, the state too must renew itself. The July Uprising marked the beginning of that renewal. But if we do not see qualitative transformation in state structures, this revolution will be in vain,” Nahid said in his keynote address.
He reiterated that the uprising was never about changing individuals or political parties—it was about dismantling fascism and creating a just, rights-based society. “We made it clear from the beginning—our declaration was to abolish fascism and establish a new political order. Without justice and structural reform, the movement loses its purpose,” he added.
Calling for swift and effective implementation of reform, Nahid said, “The Citizen Party is moving forward with a clear agenda of justice, reform, and Constituent Assembly elections. We have demanded a roadmap from the government and expect visible progress in a short time.”
NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossain echoed Nahid’s sentiments, stressing that essential reforms must begin under the interim government to prevent a return to authoritarianism. “We expect the next government to carry forward this process consistently,” he said.
Akhter also addressed the neglect of the Bengali calendar, pointing out that grassroots farmers still rely on it for agricultural planning. “While we often overlook the Bengali calendar, rural communities deeply depend on it. We hope the state recognizes its cultural and practical significance,” he concluded.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that the NCP leaders’ statements come amid growing calls for deeper political and constitutional reforms, with many viewing the July Uprising as a pivotal moment that must not be wasted.
