Nasiruddin sued over ‘defamatory remarks’ about Jubo Dal leader

A defamation case has been filed against Nasiruddin Patwary, chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP), for making “unsubstantiated” allegations of extortion and corruption against BNP, and a leader from its youth wing.

Jubo Dal leader Kazi Mukituzzaman filed the case with the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain on Monday. The court directed the Detective Branch (DB) of police to investigate the matter and submit a report by 30 November.

Shortly after the court issued the order, Jubo Shakti, NCP’s youth wing, issued a statement protesting the “unfounded libel case” and demanding its withdrawal.

“The identity of the extortionists is clear to all, and the politically motivated lawsuit is only intended to shield them,” Jubo Shakti leaders said, terming the lawsuit as a tool to threaten young reformist leaders.

Earlier, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Advocate Mehedi Hasan Jewel, said that Nasiruddin has repeatedly made reckless comments about senior BNP leaders. “We felt it was time to put a stop to it, and that’s why we filed the case,” he added.

According to the complaint, Nasiruddin Patwary deliberately and maliciously spread false, fabricated, misleading, and defamatory statements on social and mass media against BNP and its leaders, intending to damage their reputation and humiliate them socially.

On 1 November, Patwari reportedly made comments about Jubo Dal leader Rabiul Islam Noyon, saying, “There’s a leader in Dhaka city named Noyon; the amount of extortion and corruption he alone has committed could fund a national referendum in Bangladesh.”

The complainant alleged that such comments have tarnished the image of the BNP in society and are defamatory in nature.
