The interim government has set a maximum campaign expenditure of Tk10 per voter for parliamentary candidates in a move aimed at boosting transparency in national elections.
Candidates exceeding the limit may face legal action from the Election Commission, according to a new ordinance issued by the government.
The Representation of the People Order (Amendment) Ordinance-2025 was published in a gazette by the Law Ministry on Monday, ahead of the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election.
The updated election law brings political parties directly under campaign finance regulations. Parties must now publicly disclose detailed lists of donations on their official websites in a clear and comprehensive format.
Under Article 44 of the amended ordinance, the spending limit has been formalised at Tk10 per voter.
Additionally, the security deposit required for filing candidacy has been increased from Tk20,000 to Tk50,000 under Article 13.
A new provision under Article 73 introduces penalties for spreading misinformation, disinformation, rumors, and misuse of artificial intelligence related to candidates and political parties.
Article 90 further addresses party registration and financial donations, stating that election symbols may be suspended if a party’s registration is halted.
