Members of the Bangladesh Navy have rescued 26 fishermen onboard a trawler that had been drifting in the deep sea for five days after its engine went out of order.

The trawler came to the attention of navy personnel on Tuesday while they were patrolling the sea as part of protecting the mother hilsa.

The fishermen were rescued from 27 nautical miles off the Cox’s Bazar lighthouse in the Bay of Bengal.

A Navy press release said that the fishermen went to the deep sea with the trawler “MV Tajminur Rahman” to fish on 30 September.

Its engine went out of order on 3 October and the fishermen had been floating in the sea since then.

During the patrol, the navy ship, “Shaheed Mohibullah”, noticed the fishermen’s signal from the trawler.

They then rescued the fishermen and brought them to shore safely along with the trawler.

The fishermen were provided with necessary food, clean water and first aid and later sent to their homes at Moheshkhali upazila in Cox’s Bazar, the release added.
