The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is facing mounting internal dissent as officials under the banner of NBR Reform Unity Council on Monday issued an ultimatum demanding the removal of NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan by May 29, citing a breakdown of trust in his leadership.
At a press conference held in the capital, key council representatives stated that senior officials and staff across multiple departments had lost confidence in the chairman’s ability to lead the organization effectively.
Additional Tax Commissioner Monalisa Shaharin, Deputy Tax Commissioner Roisunn Nesa, and Second Secretary Shahadat Jamil addressed the media on behalf of the protesting officials.
“The leadership crisis at the top has demoralized the workforce and jeopardized the institution’s ability to perform its critical role in national revenue generation,” said Monalisa Shaharin.
The press conference was attended by a cross-section of officers and employees from various wings of the revenue board, united in their demand for change.
As part of their protest, the officials announced a programme of non-cooperation with the current chairman, pledging to continue administrative functions independently and without direct engagement with his office.
In a notable gesture aimed at minimizing any disruption to state revenue collection, the officials declared they would voluntarily work three to four extra hours daily.
“Our grievance is with the leadership, not the institution. We are committed to ensuring revenue targets are not compromised,” stated Deputy Tax Commissioner Roisunn Nesa.
To further press their call for structural reform, the council also announced an upcoming seminar titled “What Kind of NBR Do We Want?” scheduled for next month. The seminar aims to create a platform for open discussion on reform priorities and expectations for institutional accountability and efficiency.
The internal rift comes amid broader national concerns about fiscal transparency, tax reform, and revenue shortfalls, as the government prepares to unveil the next national budget.
The Finance Ministry has yet to issue a formal response to the protest or the ultimatum.
