The Nationalist Citizen Party (NCP) is set to stage a protest rally today in Dhaka, calling for the cancellation of the Awami League’s registration, suspension of its political activities, and trial for alleged crimes committed during its 16-year rule.
The youth-led political group Nationalist Citizen Party (NCP) will organize a rally today, Friday (May 2), at 3 PM near the south gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the capital. The protest, led by the Dhaka Metropolitan wing of the party, aims to demand the banning of the Awami League’s political activities, revocation of its registration, and legal action against the party for a series of alleged offenses.
Senior NCP leaders including Convenor Nahid Islam, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Chief Organizer Hasnat Abdullah, and Sarjis Alam are scheduled to address the rally. Central committee members will also join the demonstration. Simultaneously, the party has instructed nationwide protests echoing the same demand.
Ahead of the rally, NCP has conducted a series of public campaigns and leaflet distributions in areas including Gulistan, Banglamotor, and Mirpur. The leaflets outline what NCP calls “seven major crimes” committed by the ruling Awami League, including the 2009 BDR mutiny crackdown, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, suppression of opposition movements, election rigging in 2014, 2018, and 2024, large-scale corruption, and massacres during the July uprisings.
NCP’s charter of demands includes:
- Formation of international-standard tribunals to try Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League for alleged crimes;
- Cancellation of Awami League’s registration before the next election;
- Ban on all political activities of the party during ongoing trials;
- Prosecution and disqualification of individuals involved in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections.
NCP’s Senior Joint Convenor Ariful Islam Adeeb said the party is determined to hold the Awami League accountable for alleged fascist governance and mass killings. “We will amplify our call for justice at today’s rally and demand an immediate political ban on the party,” he said.
Asad Bin Roni, an NCP organizer from Dhaka South, told media that over 20,000 supporters and activists are expected to attend. “We are fully prepared to make this rally our largest to date,” said Joint Member Secretary Zainal Abedin Shishir.
Speaking to media, Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer (Southern Region), reiterated, “Awami League has lost its political legitimacy after the July uprising. We won’t let them operate under any form. This rally will send a strong message.”
