Talks to launch a new four-party alliance ahead of the upcoming national election stalled at the last moment after the National Citizen Party (NCP) objected to including United Peoples Bangladesh (UP Bangladesh) in the coalition.

The planned announcement has now been delayed, forcing the alliance initiative to be pushed back.

A meeting scheduled for Thursday morning at the Shahid Abu Sayeed Convention Centre was called off hours before it was due to start.

Speaking to the media, AB Party Joint Office Secretary Moshior Rahman Milu said the meeting was postponed unexpectedly. “We will inform later. It was postponed suddenly at midnight.

Our partners have issues to discuss internally. NCP has many junior leaders, and there are matters that need further clarity. That’s why we are delaying,” he said.

Milu added that NCP does not want to include UP Bangladesh in the coalition due to internal disagreements. “The coalition will happen, but it will take a little more time,” he said.

The proposed alliance involves four parties: the National Citizen Party (NCP), the Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party, Bangladesh Rashtriya Sanskar Andolon, and United Peoples Bangladesh (UP Bangladesh). The bloc was expected to formally introduce itself at today’s gathering, but the plan collapsed.

An NCP source said the party’s election management committee held an emergency meeting late Wednesday. During the discussion, a section of NCP leaders refused to accept UP Bangladesh in the alliance, preventing consensus on their inclusion. As a result, the broader coalition talks slowed.

Another senior NCP leader, requesting anonymity, said several NCP members opposed forming an alliance with UP Bangladesh during the late-night meeting. “NCP ultimately decided not to include UP Bangladesh. Now, if other potential alliance partners insist on UP Bangladesh’s inclusion, the coalition may face uncertainty. That is why discussions are ongoing. For now, today’s meeting is not taking place,” he said.

UP Bangladesh Convener Ali Ahsan Junayed told Dhaka Post that the alliance formation process has been delayed, but discussions continue. “We will confirm when things are final,” he said.

When asked about claims that NCP does not want UP Bangladesh in the coalition, he said, “We have not been officially informed of any such decision.”
