The National Citizens’ Party (NCP) has announced it will not participate in the signing ceremony of the July Charter.

The decision was disclosed in a press statement issued by the party’s media cell late on Thursday.

According to the statement, the NCP believes the signing ceremony will not provide any legal foundation and will remain merely a formality. The party has repeatedly emphasised the need to establish legal legitimacy before proceeding with such agreements. Without legal backing, the statement warned, the charter could turn into another one-sided document similar to the “July Declaration”.

The NCP further stated that since the Consensus Commission has extended the deadline, the party will take part in the subsequent process to present its position. If its demands are met, NCP will consider joining the signing process at a later stage.

The interim government has scheduled the ‘July Charter 2025’ signing ceremony for Friday afternoon at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building. Just hours before the event, NCP — a key political force led by student and youth activists at the forefront of the movement that toppled the Awami League government — confirmed its decision to boycott the ceremony.
