The National Citizens’ Party (NCP) will hold a protest rally in front of the Election Commission (EC) office today, demanding the reformation of the EC and the immediate announcement of local government elections.
The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday. NCP leaders announced the program at an emergency press conference held Tuesday night at the party’s office in Rupayan Tower, Banglamotor, Dhaka.
In a written statement, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said the current Election Commission has lost public confidence due to alleged bias in conducting elections. “The controversial 2020 Dhaka South City Corporation polls sparked today’s political crisis. The EC’s partial role is to blame,” he stated.
Party Convener Md Nahid Islam, responding to a journalist’s query, said, “The EC is acting with favoritism. We no longer trust them, so immediate reformation is essential.” He accused the Commission of taking a partisan stance, especially in the legal battle over the Dhaka South mayoral post involving Ishraq Hossain and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
The NCP leaders further claimed that even before the court’s verdict, an administrator was appointed to Dhaka South City Corporation, rendering the case ineffective. They alleged that the EC hastily published a gazette notification before receiving official opinion from the law ministry, which, they argue, reflects clear partiality.
Referring to the Prime Adviser’s statement that elections would be held by June, Nahid Islam emphasized the need for local government polls to restore political stability and public trust in the EC. He also noted that reluctance from major parties like BNP to join local polls has added to the uncertainty.
The NCP believes that holding local elections now will help ease the ongoing crisis and rebuild confidence in the electoral process.
