National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Thursday declared that his party would not contest the upcoming national election unless the July Charter is implemented in full.
Speaking to reporters in Syedpur upazila of Nilphamari after paying tribute at the grave of Sajjad Hossain — a martyr of the July Mass Uprising — Nahid, also a former adviser to the interim government, said, “We will boycott the national election if the recommendations of the July Charter are not implemented before the polls.”
He stressed that the July Charter, shaped by nationwide consensus on 16 July last year, represents the roadmap for building a new, inclusive, democratic Bangladesh.
Nahid further stated that the NCP has launched a countrywide Road March from the northern region to mobilize public support for a Bangladesh free from discrimination and corruption.
“The fascist government may have been overthrown by the July Mass Uprising, but their collaborators remain active and continue plotting anti-state conspiracies,” he warned, urging followers to uphold the spirit of the uprising.
Echoing earlier sentiments, National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Prof Ali Riaz expressed optimism about finalising and signing the charter, despite delays.
Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus previously said the new Bangladesh would be governed by the principles outlined in the July Charter, which is seen as a Magna Carta for the country’s democratic transition.
The charter aims to restore democracy, end political criminalisation, and reduce corporate influence in parliament — with political parties expected to sign and commit to implementing the outlined reforms.
However, with elections expected a week before Ramadan in February, the commission is yet to formally announce the charter.
