Despite reduced traffic and shuttered industries during Eid-ul-Azha, Dhaka recorded an “unhealthy” air quality level on Sunday, placing third among the world’s most polluted cities.
On June 8, 2025, Dhaka’s Air Quality Index (AQI) averaged 150, according to Swiss-based air monitoring platform IQAir. The capital trailed only Delhi (167) and Santiago (Chile) in the global pollution rankings that day.
Lake Park in Gulshan topped the list of Dhaka’s most polluted areas with an AQI of 163. Other high-risk zones included Kallyanpur, Becharam Dewri in Old Dhaka, and the Eastern Housing area of Mirpur.
The high pollution levels persisted despite the city’s empty streets and halted factory operations during the Eid holidays—factors typically associated with improved air conditions.
IQAir issued a public health advisory urging residents to wear masks outdoors, avoid physical activity in open areas, and keep windows closed to reduce exposure.
