Liberty News Desk

“Neel Padma” (The Blue Lotus), starring acclaimed actress Runa Khan, has clinched the Best Full-Length Feature Film award at the Tokyo Lift-Off Film Festival 2025 in Japan.

Directed by Towfique Elahi, the film was first premiered at the Suchitra Sen International Bengali Film Festival in New York last year and was later screened at this year’s Dhaka International Film Festival.

Sharing the news on social media, director Elahi said, “Neel Padma was selected for the Tokyo Lift-Off Film Festival, but I was surprised it won the Best Feature Film award among so many outstanding entries.” He added that the film is the result of extensive research and revealed that he discovered the award only after checking his long-neglected email inbox. “This marks the first recognition for Neel Padma,” he noted.

The director further credited the entire cast and crew for this success, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind the film’s production.

“Neel Padma” explores the complex lives, social identities, and rights of sex workers in Daulatdia, one of the largest brothel areas in Bangladesh. Runa Khan plays the lead role, with a strong supporting cast including Rashed Mamun Apu, Rokeya Prachy, Sujat Shimul, Shahed Ali, and AK Azad Setu.
